Schools Creating AI-Specific Degrees #

More schools are offering AI-specific degrees due to the increasing demand for AI talent in companies. AI-specific programs at the associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels are on the rise. Computer science, mathematics, and engineering fundamentals are still considered critical for these programs despite the ever-changing nature of AI technology. Some colleges and universities now offer a four-year “AI” degree that goes beyond the foundations of computer science to teach machine learning, computing algorithms, data analytics, and advanced robotics. There has been a significant growth in AI degree awards since 2011, surpassing the growth of STEM degrees. While some question the applicability of an AI-specific degree, proponents believe a focus on AI combined with a solid foundation in computer science can provide career advantages. Certificate programs and online platforms are also available for students who want to upskill quickly or have time constraints. Students should carefully consider the differences between AI and computer science programs and determine their desired career trajectory before choosing a program.
