Living with Uncontrolled Hypertension Raises Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease, Study Finds

A recent metanalysis revealed that 46% of adults worldwide with high blood pressure are unaware of their condition. Living with uncontrolled hypertension increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease for people aged 60 and older. Individuals with untreated high blood pressure face a 36% higher risk of Alzheimer’s compared to those without hypertension, while those taking blood pressure medications have a 42% increased risk. The study also found that unmedicated hypertension leads to a 69% greater risk of non-Alzheimer’s dementia. Controlling blood pressure with medication eliminates the elevated risk of non-Alzheimer’s dementia.
